David A. Makman is a highly accomplished litigator with deep expertise in patent and intellectual property disputes. His practice focuses on resolving complex, high-stakes conflicts involving what he describes as “broken promises and stolen ideas”.
After graduating from Duke University School of Law with a JD and an LLM in International and Comparative Law, Mr. Makman began his career handling intellectual property litigation involving patent disputes primarily related to semiconductor technology. Over the course of his career, he has successfully managed domestic and international disputes with claims ranging from tens to hundreds of millions of dollars, representing both U.S. and Japanese companies.
Since founding his own firm in 2009, Mr. Makman has further expanded his practice to encompass corporate governance, breach of contract, and breach of fiduciary duty. He has represented diverse clients in arbitrations under JAMS, AAA, and ICDR rules and continues to broaden his work as an arbitrator and mediator, leading the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) practice at Miura & Partners US.
Fluent in Japanese, Mr. Makman brings a wealth of cross-cultural expertise to the firm. His background includes a study abroad program at International Christian University and Sophia University in Tokyo, as well as professional experience working at a Japanese software startup. He also contributes to the academic community as an instructor in Japanese law at the University of California Law San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings).
